Tulbagh

Tulbagh is situated on the northern end of the beautiful and fertile Tulbagh Valley. The Valley is almost completely surrounded by majestic mountain ranges – the Obiqua mountains to the west, the towering Winterhoek to the north and the Witzenberg to the east. The Winterhoek Mountains tower 2 077 metres above sea level and are picturesquely snowcapped in winter. There is an abundance of fynbos in the area and high up in the mountains you can find the majestic King Protea and beautiful disas.

There is an abundance of birdlife in the area: the black eagle, gymnogene, booted eagle and lots of smaller species abound.

Tulbagh has various hiking trails which will lead you through pristine fynbos, proteas and rich wild life including fish eagle, blue crane, grysbok, duiker and the geometric tortoise.

The two-day Silwerfontein Hiking Trail can be undertaken from Silwerfontein which has been declared a Natural Heritage Site. The first night is spent in a double-decker bus and the second night is spent in Ontongs Cave with spectacular views of the whole area.

The Murludi Hiking trail is a 4km or a 10km hiking trail with views of the mountains and the valley.

The Tolbos Hiking Trail will take you right to the top of Inkruip Peak with excellent views over the western valleys of vineyards and wheat fields, with Table Mountain in the background.
