Stellenbosch Wine Route

stell-Rustenberg-Vine-rows.jpgThe Stellenbosch region lies at the centre of the Cape winelands’ biodiversity. To the naked eye, Stellenbosch is a natural splendour: from the windswept False Bay coast to the rugged Simonsberg Mountains, from Klapmuts to the Helderberg, this region is recognised as one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world.

Throughout the region’s winemaking history of over three centuries, Stellenbosch farmers have been aware of their proximity to nature. Today some 10 wineries are members of the Biodiversity & Wwine Initiative, a blue chip status underlining the fact that these farms lie in some of the most ecologically sensitive regions in the world. The farms Delheim, Hartenberg, Koopmanskloof, Lanzerac, Louiesenhof, Mooiplaaas, Rustenberg, Waterford and Spier Vineyards harbour not only fine vineyards but thousands of flowers and plants which are part of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

The ecology is also a major tourist attraction, with the Vineyard Hiking Trail and the walk through Delvera allowing the public to embark on breathtakingly beautiful hikes into the heart of the indigenous floral kingdom. Not only for the plants but also for the array of birds and other animals which are dependent on this virgin land which the Stellenbosch wine community is protecting for future generations. Because nature is our heritage.
